John Frederick Herring Snr. was one of 19th-century England’s most celebrated animal painters, renowned for his portraits of horses, livestock, and domestic animals. Originally a coach painter and signmaker, he rose to prominence for his equestrian scenes, eventually becoming a favorite of the British aristocracy. Herring’s work is marked by technical precision, rich color, and a deep sensitivity to his subjects, whether in the field or by the hearth.
